The ACS Office of Sustainability has organized this engaging session in alignment with the U.N.’s Sustainable Development Goals #3. This session will bring together researchers focused on reducing the environmental and health impacts of medicines and commercial chemicals, working toward a healthier, more sustainable future for all. Experts from industry will explore the current and future frontiers of producing medicines with minimal environmental footprints, identifying the fundamental research areas that will drive innovations in this field. Additionally, an interactive poster session and reception celebrating the 20th anniversary of the will be enjoyed.

Water-Soluble Polymers: From Foundational Science to Finished Products

Water-soluble polymers play a vital role across diverse industries, including food and beverage, personal care, and household care. The effective design of these polymers necessitates a comprehensive understanding of their molecular structure, synthesis methods, characterization, and properties. This session will explore the foundational science underpinning water-soluble polymer development, the translation of this knowledge into practical polymer design and industrial applications, and the integration of these materials into consumer products.

Circular Water Economy

The global demand for freshwater continues to rise due to economic growth and urbanization, while available freshwater supplies are increasingly limited, resulting in heightened water stress worldwide. The current linear water economy mostly operates on a single-use model, where water is used once and then discarded, leading to significant consumptions of energy and supplies to remove contaminants from wastewater, while simultaneously flushing away valuable resources. A circular water economy vision is proposed to selectively recover useful resources in wastewater such as critical minerals, nutrients, organics, and freshwater while removing key contaminants such as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and microplastics to improve the energy efficiency of the entire water cycle, relieve the supply chain shortage of critical materials, and enable cost-effective fit-for-purpose water reuse.

Join us for this one-day symposium, collaborative symposium designed to foster partnerships and drive meaningful connections across multiple dimensions of the circular water economy. This symposium will explore cutting-edge research, development, and translation (RD&T) on the selective separation, detection, and recovery of critical resources/contaminants from various water sources as well as potential challenges and opportunities currently present in the field.
