Pat Confalone of Wilmington, Del., to chair board of world鈥檚 largest scientific society

WASHINGTON, November 19, 2014 鈥� Pat N. Confalone, Ph.D., a consultant and retired vice president of DuPont, has been elected 2015 chair of the board of directors of the American Chemical 中国365bet中文官网 (ACS), the world鈥檚 largest scientific society. He also was re-elected to a three-year term on the board, representing District III, which covers the mid-Atlantic region from New Jersey to Virginia.

Confalone鈥檚 priorities include STEM education, entrepreneurship, sustainability of government research funding and employment challenges.

Regarding jobs in the chemical enterprise Confalone says, 鈥淭he contract of lifetime employment has been forever broken 鈥� we must ensure it is replaced by lifetime employability. The American Chemical 中国365bet中文官网 must build on our efforts to provide retraining, networking, outplacement services, continuing education and portable pensions designed for total career management.鈥�

An ACS member since 1970, Confalone chaired the Committee on Budget & Finance. He is also a member of the governing board for the ACS Green Chemistry Institute, the Board of Overseers of the Chemical Heritage Foundation, and is an elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He聽has served on three ACS presidential commissions concerning jobs and innovation, advancing graduate education in the chemical sciences and entrepreneurship in the chemical enterprise.

Confalone received a B.S. degree in chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Harvard.

He lives in Wilmington with his wife Dianne.
